Chapter 5
I rub my eyes. Iâm not sure where I am. Iâm in a four poster bed. Darlene is sleeping next to me. Beyond her is Catherine. Now I remember.
Itâs happening again. Regret swirls in my belly. I hold my breath to stay as quiet as possible. The soft rasp of their breathing makes a lazy, disconcordant rhythm. I canât bear to look. I ease myself off the bed, grab my clothes and slip away. I pause in the doorway and glance back at Darlene.
âIâm sorry,â I whisper.
Back in my room I quickly get changed. I choose practical. Black jeans, sneakers, thick wool sweater and an old but chic military style jacket. I pull on a tattered old cap and tuck my hair into my collar. I look at myself in the mirror. I look plain, washed out shades of gray. I should blend in. I grab a bag and pack a change of clothes, spare underwear, masks, tampons, toothbrush. I donât know how long Iâll be gone. I need to be self sufficient, but I also need to travel light. I look around my room, wondering what else I will need. I donât have long. Darlene is an early riser too. I need to be gone before she wakes.
I cram everything in my pack with shaking hands and secure the flap. I grab the cash from my purse and stuff them into my pockets. I toss the purse on the bed.
A floorboard creaks upstairs. Time to go. I stop at the door and take one last look at the world I am leaving behind. A picture of me and Darlene looks back at me from the nightstand. Itâs our first picture together. It was Oktoberfest. Weâre hugging and smiling, all smiles and rosey cheeks from the cold. It seems like a lifetime ago. I canât leave it behind. I put it in my bag and head out.
Iâm moving down the stairs when I hear her.
âCourtney?â Damn, sheâs up already. I shoulder the pack and jump the last few steps. Darlene is thumping down the ancient wooden stairs above me. I just have to get to the front door before she can stop me. Itâs right there but I canât move. Iâm stuck. Something is pulling me back. Iâm confused. I look back. A strap of the bag is hooked up on the banister. I unhitch it, but Iâm too slow. Sheâs here.
âCourtney, where are you going?â she says from the top of the stairs. She is wearing just a white shirt and low-rise panties, hands on her hips. I can see the outline of her nipples pressing against her shirt. She looks beautiful. Too beautiful. Something inside me aches. I nearly crack. I have to look away.
âI donât know. Home, I guess.â
âWhat about last night? I thought you were over this.â
âPlease,â I say. I put the other strap over my shoulder. âI canât do this, Darlene.â My eyes are hot and wet. Theyâre threatening to embarrass me.
âDonât. Just donât.â
I inch towards the door.
